When reflecting on my high school days, most of my memories bring me back to all the times shared with a boyfriend. Amongst these four years, I’ve had countless memories with my group of girlfriends that I honestly didn’t start to fully cherish until after moving away to college. Don’t get me wrong, I love my friend group more than anything in this world, but I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we didn’t know the value of these high school friendships until way after we graduated and had a chance to be by ourselves.
During the entirety high school, each one of us were in a long relationship of some sort. Yes, we would still hangout and keep each other updated on what went on in our lives. We frequently tried planning double dates or social events where we would bring our significant other and they usually fell through. “Girls Day” didn’t happen as much as it does now due to our busy schedules. Our weeks were a constant balance between school, sports, work, boyfriends, family and friends.
We all became single around the same time. Either before moving into our schools or shortly after the start of the semester. Once this happened, we were able to connect more onto a deeper level of friendship because we all had been experiencing similar emotions. I realized then that the people who meant the most to me were the ones that I never had to see or talk to every day.
Now after living the single life with each other for quite a while, we have used this time to become closer and realized what our friend group is worth. We have our own fun, while understanding what it feels like to be without a relationship. If it weren’t for you guys, I’d never have something I’d genuinely be a part of no matter where life takes me. I have never felt so full and complete while being single.
No matter how many times we say “why don’t we have boyfriends”, deep down I’m eternally grateful for this time of focusing on our friendships. Thank you girls for helping me learn how to love being without a guy.
From,
The girl who’d rather have a GNO than a hot date
