Last year, rightfully, Amy Schumer was in just about everything. She's successful, hilarious, confident, and is constantly fighting for feminism and body positivity. Whatever she had to say became a headline and has personally inspired me to be a little more honest, to stand up for myself, and to recognize when things aren't OK. I'm not the only one who see's her as a role model and here's why:
She’s herself, unapologetically.
Wherever she goes, she refuses to conform into something else to please her fans or Hollywood. She is who she is, and she’s seriously going places. She isn't ashamed of her comedy and owns whatever is thrown at her.
She speaks her mind
This includes her open discussion about rape, double standards, sexism, body positivity, slut-shaming and just about everything else. Amy is making sure that she takes social issues down one by one, while empowering those who watch. In her show, she has tackled the most controversial of topics in order to get the discussion going. Amy is making a change through her comedy and has fought endlessly to defend her opinions.
She stands up for herself.
Whether it’s a heckler during her stand-up routine, or rude comments on social media, she takes a stand for her comedy and for other women who may be shamed for the same thing. She may be vulgar in her comedy, but that does not mean she deserves to be punished or shamed for it, and she makes sure everyone knows it.
She refuses to succumb to Hollywood’s body standards.
Amy consistently talks about her body and how it doesn’t exactly fit into the career she has chosen. She also talks about how she’s totally fine with her body and that others should accept that. Her show, "Inside Amy Schumer," takes a look at the extremes women will go to in order to possibly look like celebrities. Although they are clearly parodies, they do make a point about our constant obsession with the surface. Amy promotes body positivity and that is most certainly a blessing.
She’s hardworking and successful.
Amy Schumer owned 2015, for sure. With a movie (that she wrote and starred in), her show, "Inside Amy Schumer," (that has always been amazing), hosted an HBO comedy special, hosted "Saturday Night Live," wrote a screenplay with Jennifer Lawrence, and also signed a book deal worth up to 10 million dollars. Amy has stuck out her long road of performing stand up and is now swimming in success while fighting social issues all together.
She’s a feminist.
She truly speaks for women in her comedy. No matter the topic, she always admits a smidge of truth that women experience daily that male comics could never relate to or even try to discuss. Without Amy, some of that truth would be left in the dark. As mentioned before, she also uses her show in order to expose these truths in a way that is universally accepted. Or even on her HBO special. She is smart about it and has further welcomed feminism in the realm of comedy, society, and the world as a whole.
Thank you, Amy.
