Why must we tear down other’s opinions so quick? During all of the political debates and news stories, people want the confirmations and satisfaction that their opinion is the right one and if anyone else opposes it, then they are wrong. The world would be such a dull and monotonous place. There would not be room to learn about new topics and ideas, just to hear the same old concepts over and over again. The fact that there are multiple different groups and multiple different ways of thinking about things should give us a sense of wonder and interest.
Numerous times during school I had to pick a side on things. I had to pick what method I thought would work best or what type of style would make something more appealing. Of course I had my opinion and what I preferred, but I also liked to look at the other side of things. At first, it was hard, but after a while I would think about the other side of things and understand why some people would prefer something I did not.
During election time, there will always be people finding what the opposing person has done wrong in the past or what could make them look bad. The truth is, we are all human. We all make mistakes and probably have done something wrong in our lives at one point. Another thing we are allowed to do as humans is change our views on something. Throughout life, we experience so many things. Those experiences help us grow and often do change us in certain ways, which could then lead to a different opinion on something. Our experiences shape who we are and no one can tell us they are right or wrong because they are ours.
These elections are said to unite everyone in our country. What they actually do is unite each party individually. Obviously the goal isn’t for everyone to all agree on the same thing, otherwise there wouldn’t need to be an election. It is still important, however, to have faith that whoever is chosen next will do what is expected of them and what they say they will accomplish. It’s a time to have faith that even though we have different views, the one thing we do have in common is wanting America to be a better place.
It is often hard to speak your own opinion in the midst of all the people who are trying to influence your vote. Each and every person eligible to vote is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions whether it’s the same as their friend’s for example or completely different. With the way our world is today, so many young voters are scared to voice what they have to say. They are scared that if they do share their thoughts that some will judge them, or think differently of them. Having friends that don’t have the same views as you isn’t a bad thing. You will learn a lot from that. Allowing voters, especially the young voting population, the ability to speak what they want and stand up for their beliefs without harm and judgement should be a priority to America as well.
Each election process is different. Each voter is different. It is how we see those differences and react to them respectfully that will start the change for the better.
