What Will I Be In The Future?

When will I know which career is best for me?

What Will I Be In The Future?
Career Finding

There is a question that keeps popping up in my head, who will I be? It is a constant wonder for me to try and figure it out. While I am thinking about it these lyrics from Camp Rock come to mind:

“Who will I be?

It's up to me

All the never-ending possibilities

That I can see

There's nothing that I can't do

Who will I be?

Yes, I believe

I get to make the future what I want to

If I can become anyone and know the choice is up to me

Who will I be?”

Then I sit and think about it for a while and try to figure it out before it’s too late to change my major.

When I was younger I always wanted to be a teacher because I loved helping others succeed in what they need help with. I got to experience being a teacher for a day twice in middle school and it was great. I would say that was the first time I felt that teaching was the career I wanted to do. When exploring teaching my next obstacle was figuring out what type of teacher I wanted to be. I started to think what I liked to study and what I felt I would like to teach to other students. I found my love for social studies (otherwise known as political science). It was my favorite subject and it still is.

But as I got older, I started to second guess my choice of wanting to be a teacher. At that point in my life I just didn’t know what I wanted to do. Throughout high school I tried to figure out what I wanted to do by taking elective classes and it helped a little bit, but not enough. Then, the summer before my senior year of high school I sat down and thought what I could do with my life. Then the light bulb over my head went on. The topic of computer came in my head, and I started to think what I could do with computers. I looked at computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, information technology and the list went on and on. I found that I wanted to go into computer information systems, which would lead me to be a systems analyst, systems integrator, technical support specialist, computer programmer, network administrator and many more options.

When going into my first year of college, computer information systems was my major. Then as the year continued, I found that I wanted to do cyber security and choose to go down that path for the years to come. But currently, I am trying to figure out what I want to do again. I started to volunteer at a hospital to see if I want to go into that field. I have also spoken to my advisor about my potential cyber security career. Now I am just waiting to see where I am going to go with my life.

Who knows, I might change my major again. But, the thing is, that it happens to everyone and everyone has a calling. I'm just still trying to figure out mine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
