I joined Greek life at Wofford simply because it looked fun...and man, oh man was I right! But it didn't take long for me to realize that I had entered into something that was about to get so much bigger.
When you get initiated into a fraternity or sorority, you are entrusted with a set of letters that signifies much, much more than a rundown house where students drink the weekends away; those letters signify your family and the everlasting bonds of brotherhood/sisterhood. You will develop friendships and rivalries with your brothers and sisters that could very well last a lifetime. Although, who could forget some of the wild times that our fraternity row provided (I'm going to guess a lot of people)? But alas, the winds of change are beginning to rustle the many leaves at Wofford College once again...
At the end of last year, the demolition of "The Row" officially began and those ancient, and probably condemned, houses were finally put out of commission. So many traditions and memories will be lost during the demolition, as it is truly the end of an era. The college will be building new houses that are scheduled to be completed by February 2016, but in the mean time we will have to figure out an alternative way to let loose. Fear not, fellow students! When one door closes another one full of opportunity swings wide open. All that is required of us is to step right in.
Gone are the days when we could hide in our back porches, listening to music that only we liked. Gone are the days where the only interactions between fraternities and sororities were heated intramural battles. Gone are the days of exclusivity. Here we sit, mourning the loss of our beloved houses when, in reality, we are standing on a gold mine! Walls and cheap, wooden gates were the only thing that stood between 6 decent weekend parties. Well, now the walls are gone and we have nothing to separate us. It's about time that we team up and put our skills to the test!
So what do I propose? One Great Show. For me. For you. For us. Let's pool our talents and put on an event that literally redefines Greek Life.
But Wesley, I just don't think we'll be able to pull it off...
My dear friends, we are the future captains of industry; we are the artists that will soon be setting the trends; we are the millennial generation. Our best quality is that we "pull it off." Just watch us. Imagine the beauty of such a scene; every student, Greek or not, gathered together with one goal in mind: having the time of their lives.
Let's face it, Wofford is evolving and Greek Life could quite possibly crumble out of existence if it doesn't evolve too. So I put it to you, the student body, to rally together and make this year unforgettable. Suit up and put your party face on; step out of your comfort zones and join me on this quest to make a difference that will last for generations.
