The Super Bowl is considered to be the biggest and most important sporting event of the year by lots of Americans. So, if so many Americans thought so highly of this event, then why would they not attend? The answer is simple: ticket prices. It is no secret that Super Bowl ticket prices are exorbitantly expensive. Now, I completely understand that this is a huge sporting event, but it still left me wondering: Why are ticket prices so high? Some may say that it is because of the expensive half time performance or to pay for the usual fairly new and expensive arena, but I blame the American people for these astronomically high prices.
Americans, in their own way, have ruined the opportunity of attending the Super Bowl for themselves. Football is a part of American culture, I totally get that, but people put these players on pedestals like gods. It is widely known throughout America that Sunday is the day for football. People hurry to church in the morning, so they can be back in the afternoon for kickoff. This has become a weekly ritual for Americans cross country for decades. By setting aside a whole day of the week for these pro athletes, Americans have indirectly increased prices for themselves. It is America as a whole to blame for the prices of tickets. Businesses utilize and exploit the importance that Americans have placed on the NFL. Whether or not the companies are ripping people off is up to interpretation, but the reason they place prices so high is because they know people will continue to pay them. The industry of the NFL has profited greatly off of people's simple love of watching the best of the best each week.
The cheapest ticket listed on ticketmaster.com as of February 4, 2017 was 2745 dollars. This is a lot of money for the average American. But, companies like Ticketmaster know that they can get away with charging this much because people will always pay. Americans have idolized the Super Bowl for years and the prices are a culmination of years or worship and adoration. For Americans, this Sunday religion costs them a little more than a few dollars in the collection basket.
