I recently watched a documentary called White People, that aired on MTV about a month or so ago. This documentary, written and directed by Jose Antonio Vargas (Pulitzer Prize winner, journalist, and director), explores the question, “What does it mean to be white?” Often times, we tend to take the minority point-of-view when speaking of diversity, inequality, and injustices, and rightfully so. But with that said, the majority group is usually ignored and deemed as oppressive, or the cause of the problem. Vargas decided to face this issue head on by creating an emotional, authentic, and eye-opening documentary that explores what it is to be part of a group that has been called the enemy for so long. As the president of the Black Student Union at my school, and an agent of change when it comes to any kind of injustice, I think it’s extremely important to understand both sides of any issue. From colorblindness to affirmative action, White People is a must watch for students and other individuals everywhere. Watch it with you friends, your parents, or by yourself.
