What does it mean to be an introvert? To some, the word “introvert” conjures up an image of a shy, socially awkward person who never leaves his or her room. Others see introverts as wise, introspective individuals who simply think before they speak.
On the surface, an introvert is the opposite of an extrovert: an extrovert tends to be a talkative, enthusiastic individual who thrives in social, stimulating environments. Alternatively, introverts prefer quieter environments and need to recharge after socializing with large groups. They tend to turn more inward than outward. They also often can’t just fit into one category; I, a self-described introvert, can speak from experience. For example, I love the rush of dancing on stage and don’t mind all the attention focused on me, but at the same time, spending hours talking with teams backstage can be absolutely draining.
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all definition for introversion; introverts are a diverse group, with people of many different personalities. Jonathan Cheek, a psychology professor at Wellesley College, surveyed a 500 adults with questions about their temperament and personal preferences, eventually designing a four-part model of introversion. The acronym, STAR, stands for Social, Thinking, Anxious, and Restrained.
Social: You need your alone time, and you prefer hanging out with a small group of friends than attending large parties. You aren’t shy, but you get tired from excessive socialization.
Thinking: You like to get lost in your thoughts. You are dreamy and imaginative, and love to reflect on life. You don’t mind socializing but you dislike small talk.
Anxious: You lack the social skills and confidence to be around others, which pushes you away from people. You prefer time alone, but it isn’t necessarily enjoyable because you constantly worry about what could have happened.
Restrained: You think before you speak or act, and people describe you as reserved. You are organized and need to plan things out before taking action; sometimes your brain needs to “warm up” before you go out and socialize.
