Where's The Respect?

Imagine yourself in an officer's shoes.

Five police officers killed late Thursday night in Dallas, Texas. Eleven officers shot total. Those numbers do not take the most recent Friday shootings in Georgia, Missouri and Tennessee into account. Just while writing this article, the number of shootings of police officers across the United States has increased. In the Georgia incident, the suspect was the one who called 911 reporting a break-in and then ambushed and shot the officer that arrived at the scene.

In light of recent events, our law enforcement has come under great scrutiny. Their work and beliefs are being doubted in every aspect of the media. They are being targeted by civilians and lives are being lost. What is one accomplishing by killing these police officers? What kind of human being kills the people whose job is to protect the citizens of this country? Killing doesn't solve the problem. These are men and women, white and black. They sign up to keep us safe on a daily basis. This article is not meant to be about politics or racism. The point is to take a minute and thank our police force. They do not get nearly enough credit as they deserve and it is important to show this appreciation, especially under the current circumstances.

Thank you for your service. You do honorable things every day that do not get noticed or acknowledged. Why is it that only negative stories make the media? In today's society, it seems a police officer can never do anything right. We must have perspective when we hear about "bad" police officers. The reality is that the actual percentage of these officers is very small.

Thank you for your commitment. You work holidays, weekends, days and nights. Crimes are committed every minute of every hour and yet you never stop. Even now when your lives are in danger just by being out in public, you continue to serve.

Thank you for your courage. You go into situations not knowing what to expect. You often put yourself in danger when trying to protect others. Once again looking at the Georgia shooting, you never know what is going to happen when responding to a call. It is sickening that someone would call the police only to target them.

Thank you for your sacrifice. You would and have taken bullets for civilians in a heartbeat. No matter what may have led to the protests and shootings, these officers did not deserve to die. All officers that have lost their lives shall be remembered for their noble and honorable actions.

What kind of country do we live in when we are fighting against the ones that are fighting to protect us? No matter what we do, bad things are going to happen. But I feel safe when I'm walking outside at night and I see a police officer. I know that they signed up for that job to protect the citizens of their country. They risk their lives every day for us. With all of this negative media, we need police officers now more than ever before. They are the ones who will be there when you need them the most. Black lives matter. Blue lives matter. All lives matter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
