For as long as Penn Staters can remember, The Waffle Shop has been home to every brunch date, family visit, weekend celebration and occasionally, the hangover cure. It's the place that reminds us of the fond memories at our hometown diners. We've waited the long morning lines, abided by the strict cash only rule (newbies beware) and we've indulged in countless waffles, pancakes and even omelets. But guess what? The Waffle Shop has got some friendly brunch competition. While it will always hold a special place in our heart, there is always room for more favorite food spots. Here's where to go if you're thinking of taking a nice break from The Waffle Shop and being a little less basic at brunch (in no particular order):
1. Sowers Harvest Café
Two words: extremely underrated. Located a little to the left of DP Dough, this cute little brunch place that just opened last year definitely hits the spot. They've got smoothies, omelets, french toast, pancakes and breakfast galore. It's also the perfect place to be studious with a nice cup of coffee next to you. And to top it all off? They also cater to your vegan and gluten-free needs. What more could you ask for? Breakfast here plus the shorter lines is a brunch dream come true.
2. Sadies Waffles
Located on the side street of South Pugh, this place brings waffles to a whole new level. And TBH, I think these waffles are better than The Waffle Shop's. I know *gasp*. But seriously though, these are BOMB. You can choose from many waffle combinations OR you can completely customize your own! They've got everything from a S'mores waffle to the "Chocolate Lovers Dream Waffle." Are you drooling yet? Not to mention they have breakfast sandwiches and bakery items too. Run over there now.
3. The Naked Egg Café
Fair warning: you have to uber or drive there. But trust me, it's worth it. Their breakfast menu is out of this world and your biggest problem will be deciding which item to choose from. From their eggs to their granola and fruit, there's no denying that their brunch game is so strong. There's just something so cute and dainty about this place, that you desperately wish we had it downtown. Drive over to Pine Grove Rd. this weekend, you won't regret it.
It's time that we step out of our comfort zone otherwise known as The Waffle Shop. So hit up one of these brunch spots the next time you're craving a killer breakfast. All the cool kids are doing it.
