In September 2007, a generation-defining television show premiered on the CW that revitalized the teen soap genre for a brand-new audience. This TV show was "Gossip Girl." After the merger of the WB and UPN in 2006 to form the CW, the new network had not produced an original bonafide hit in its first year of existence. When "Gossip Girl" premiered in 2007, it was the show that proved that the CW could produce a sure fire hit. This was also arguably the show that put the network in the teen-drama-starring-beautiful-young-people niche, a niche that the CW dominated in for over half a decade. When "Gossip Girl" came off the air in 2012, it signaled the end of an era. No longer would millennials be able to tune in to the twisted and glamorous world of Serena, Blair, Chuck, and their other Upper East Side companions. The actors that played these roles have now been forever linked with these characters that gave most of them their breakthroughs. So, what have they been up to since "Gossip Girl" ended?
Jessica Szohr (Vanessa Abrams)
Vanessa was arguably one of the least liked characters on "Gossip Girl." She was really annoying and always had a bone to pick with one of the favorite characters. Despite these, she was probably the most honest and humble character in the entire series run. Szohr left the show after the fourth season and returned in the series finale for a cameo.
Since leaving the show she has appeared in various films, including "The Internship," "House at the End of the Drive," "Two Night Stand," and "Ted 2." More recently, she appeared in DirecTV's new drama "Kingdom" and starred in USA Network's "Complications."
Michelle Trachtenberg (Georgina Sparks)
"Tell Jesus the b*tch is back." The sociopath that everyone loved to hate is the only recurring character that appeared in every season finale. Trachtenberg expertly portrayed this villain for six seasons of the show, and the character of Georgina had such a profound impact on the show that Trachtenberg was upgraded to a special guest star for the show's final season.
Since appearing in "Gossip Girl," Trachtenberg has been seen in "Sexy Evil Genius," "The Scribbler," "Killing Kennedy," and episodes of "Sleepy Hollow" and "NCIS: LA."
Taylor Momsen (Jenny Humphrey)
Little J was one of the most complex characters in "Gossip Girl," and audiences watched as she transformed from a fish-out-of-water Brooklyn ingenue to a scheming Gothic Barbie. Like Szohr, Momsen left the series after the fourth season and didn't return until she made a cameo in the series finale. Momsen left the show to pursue her music career with her rock band, The Pretty Reckless. The band has since released two EPs and two studio albums, the most recent album, "Going to Hell," peaked at number five on the Billboard 200. An interesting piece of trivia is that the band's song "Kill Me" was played at the end of the series finale of "Gossip Girl."
Chace Crawford (Nathaniel Archibald)
The Golden Boy of the show, Nate Archibald functioned as handsome heartthrob of the Upper East Side. He was involved in many relationships during the course of the show, none of them working out successfully. As a matter of fact, he is the only main character that is single by the series finale.
You can catch Crawford playing the "handsome heartthrob" once again in ABC's "Blood and Oil" Sundays at 9. Catch it before it's gone.
Ed Westwick (Charles Bass)
When you can get anything you want by simply saying "I'm Chuck Bass," then you know you are powerful. Bad Boy Chuck Bass transformed from a moral degenerate in season 1 to a suave romantic by the end of the series. One half of "Chair," fans shipped his and Blair's relationship to the end of the world and back and they finally got their payoff when the couple tied the knot the final season.
You can catch Ed Westwick in his new ABC thriller "Wicked City," Tuesdays at 10 p.m.
Penn Badgley (Dan Humphrey)
The perennial outsider, Lonely Boy was the heart of the show to which most fans of the show could relate. Dan gave the audience an inside look at the life of the wealthy and entitled from an outsider's perspective. [SPOILER] We find out in the final episode that Dan was Gossip Girl along. Despite this revelation, he and Serena gets married at the end of the series.
Penn Badgley has since appeared in "Parts Per Billion," "Cymbeline," and a couple episodes of NBC's miniseries "The Slap." He also has a burgeoning music career with his band MOTHXR.
Leighton Meester (Blair Waldorf)
The reigning Queen B of Constance Billiard School for Girls when the series starts, Blair Waldorf is the Regina George of the series. The only difference is that she was the mean girl that you can root for.
Besides marrying her "The Oranges" costar Adam Brody, Leighton Meester has since become queen of the indie films and has appeared in quite a bit of movies since "Gossip Girl" ended. Some of these include: "That's My Boy," "Life Partners," and "By The Gun." You can next see her in the television movie "Any, Tom, Dick or Harry."
Blake Lively (Serena Van Der Woodsen)
The It Girl of the Upper East Side and the main protagonist of the show, "S" was the girl who everyone else wanted to be. Portrayed by Blake Lively, this beautiful girl had a number of failed relationships throughout the series, but unlike Nate, she finally settles down with her true love at the end of the show. This being none other than Mr. Gossip Girl himself, Daniel Humphrey.
Lively took a break from acting after "Gossip Girl" ended and took some time to focus on her family with Ryan Reynolds. After the birth of her daughter, she has since returned to acting, and you can see her in this past summer's film "Age of Adaline." You can also look forward to seeing her in more films in 2016 such as "All I See is You" and "The Shallows."
