The sixth season of the hit show, "American Horror Story," premiered September 15 on FX. This season differed from previous installments due to its premiere being in September rather than October and the fact that the season's theme was kept completely under wraps until the premiere.
Fans from all over tuned in last night for the long awaited reveal only to be...confused?
Rather than the usual story format, this season took a different approach, playing out like a documentary. The theme seemed to be "My Roanoke Nightmare"– the story of a married couple who move into a house in the North Carolina countryside to escape the perils of city life, only to find their estate haunted my the ghosts of the lost colony of Roanoke.
For those unfamiliar with the story, in the summer of 1587, 115 British colonists came to America and settled on Roanoke Island (off the coast of North Carolina). The leader of the settlement returned to England to gather more supplies, but due to a naval war, he was unable to return to the colony until three years later. When he returned he found zero traces of his people, only the word "CROATOAN" carved into a tree where the settlement stood.
The mystery of what happened to those colonists was never solved although many theories still circulate today.
American Horror Story creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, hinted that the theme to this season could be traced back to the very first season of the anthology series, "Murder House". Fans of the series recall that the story of the lost colony of Roanoke was mentioned during that season.
So far reviews have been mixed with many fans wondering why their favorite returning actors weren't in last night's episode or criticizing the documentary style.
While we can assume that this season is going to unlike anything we've witnessed before, hopefully this season will help tie together all of the previous seasons as Murphy and Falchuk have been promising since season two.
Tune into FX every Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST for new episodes.
