Truths Townies Know When You're From Calais, Maine

It's the way life should be.

"I've never heard of that."

"Where is that?"

"Wow, that's far."

"You must be so close to Canada."

These are few of the common responses I get when asked where I'm from. Calais is small town (population: 3,123), north of Bangor (two hours), that borders into St. Stephen, Canada. I live four hours away from my college in Farmington and basically live in the middle of nowhere.

I've lived in Calais my whole life and I've lived in a safe environment there. But there's the problem, it's too safe; because it's so safe, people don't want to leave. Crime rates are low, mostly revolving around drugs and domestic violence, but I know that happens everywhere. Natural disasters are snowstorms and sometimes heavy wind. We all know each other, or know of each other, often dating other peoples' leftovers.

It's a poor town. Calais has the basic essentials: stores, a movie theatre, decent schools, churches, restaurants, and a few fast food chain eatery (McDonald's and Subway. That's literally it). It's very boring, lacking little form of entertainment, leading kids to do drugs because they have nothing better to do.

It's a mostly white town, with two Native American reservations, meaning we have a large Native American population as well (my best friend is Native). Needless to say, I haven't been exposed to a lot of the diverse culture that Farmington has.

Over time as I've aged and started going to college, I've developed a hate/love relationship with my hometown. Because of how small and safe it is, I feel like I've outgrown the community, tired of living so comfortably that I need to take a risk. If I want to be a bestselling novelist and among other things, these aspirations will not come to fruition if I stay in humble Calais the rest of my life.

At some point in the near future, I plan on leaving Calais for good, taking my family with me. But I'll always love Calais, it will hold a special place in my heart. It's given me the best place to get poutine, beautiful scenery in the summer and fall, International Festival, and has helped shape me into who I am today.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
