Everyone has a unique relationship with their siblings, but those of us with siblings who are at least five years our senior have a special bond that other siblings don't.
1. Little to no fighting
When you are far apart in age, you won't be fighting over the same boys or who gets to have the car tonight. Because you never went to the same high school or participated in the same activities together, you don't have the automatic commonalities that a lot of siblings closer in age to each other have
2. You learn from their mistakes
Instead of getting in trouble together, you've watched them get in trouble and make mistakes before you and know exactly what you should and shouldn't do in the future.
3. You got the chance to be an only child too
Since your siblings moved out way before you did, you got to experience being the only kid in the house and finally confirming that you are Mom's favorite. (Unfortunately, this also means having no one to go in on Christmas and birthday presents with anymore.)
4. You get jealous of other siblings
Sure, you don't have any scars from one of your brothers or sisters throwing a random object at you, but when you see the way your friends interact with their siblings, you can't help but be a little a jealous. You've never had your sister help you get ready for a date, your brother wrestle you for the remote, or screamed at each other until you had no voice because you were just at different points in your lives.
5. They're almost like second parents
You've never had to deal with awkward babysitters because they always got to watch you on date night. They are always there rooting for you, giving you advice, and hoping the best for you just like your parents are. And you know that if anything happens with your parents, you can always go to them for support because they know how crazy Mom and Dad can be.
6. When they date someone, you get another sibling
When a sibling close to your age is dating someone, you may gain a new friend or someone to hang out with now and then. When your older sibling is dating someone, you have another person looking out for you, caring for you, picking on you, wanting to see you succeed, and treating just as their own little brother or sister.
7. They're wiser than you
Your older siblings have been on this earth longer than you and have had more experiences. They've probably even been in the same situation that you're currently in and don't want Mom and Dad to know about. Older brothers and sisters can give you advice, aid you in your time of need, and help you grow as a person. Not to mention, they introduced you to new things and made you more mature. And you couldn't be more thankful that you were blessed with older siblings.
