When Your Big Goes Abroad

It's a long-distance relationship.

When Your Big Goes Abroad

When your big goes abroad you won’t see her every day.

And because you don’t see her every day you can’t tell her all the things you would normally say.

You see, Florence is a lot further than I was ever expecting; 6,192 miles to be exact.

Sure, she will text you every day to remind you how much she loves you and misses you. She will send you pictures of all the leather bags she wants to bring home to you because “leather is huge here”. When the texting just doesn't cut it anymore you will resort to FaceTiming. I thank the technological gods every day that it has been created so she can repeatedly attempt to FaceTime me during all of my classes because she still hasn't figured out my schedule. But there will be times that she does get it right (even if that means I'm driving or sleeping but that doesn't mean she can’t join). Sometimes she’ll accompany me to In-N-Out because the drive is just long enough to feel a twinge of loneliness.

So there she sits on my dashboard, making herself comfortable for the lengthy ride and salivating as much as I am for the amazing food that awaits us (wait just me), but she’ll be there nonetheless. The thing is, by FaceTiming every day, not only does she get a little piece of "SLOme" in Italy, but I get a little piece of Italy in SLOme.

Let me tell you, long distance is not for the faint of heart, you have to be prepared for FaceTime dates, expensive phone calls, and long lonely nights. But distance makes the heart grow fonder right?

Long ago, before she was my big, she warned me this day would come; the day we would have to part ways for just one quarter. She told me it would be easy, it would go by so quickly, and we would talk every day. But she was only right about one of those things: it hasn't been easy or quick, but we do talk every day and that does make it easier.

There are some things that make this time apart bearable, aside from the texting, the phone calls, and the FaceTimes. But it's comforting just knowing that she is out there experiencing all life has to offer.

You see, when your big goes abroad, she will get to travel the world.

She will go to Oktoberfest and call you to tell you she is honestly more excited about the sausage than the beer anyways. When she’s not torturing her liver at Oktoberfest she is sending me Pinterest worthy pictures of all the beautiful places she has visited. These pictures only assure me that she will serve as an amazing tour guide for when I decide to visit (hopefully Thanksgiving break). Along with all the pictures, she better bring home some killer Italian recipes to cook for me when she gets back. Aside from the outrageous stories that I am sure I will hear countless times when she returns, or the amazing scenic pictures or even the mouthwatering dishes she can now prepare, she will possess memories that will last a life time.

Because I know she is having the time of her life and that’s what makes this easier...and maybe even worth it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
