Recently one of my best friends' long-term relationship ended. The entire time I've known her she's been in that relationship. Fortunately she was one of those girls that still hung out with her friends and not only her boyfriend. Everyone that was friends with her was also friends with her boyfriend.
But now they are broken up. We don't see him as often, but when we do it's cordial. Things are not awkward at all. Okay, sometimes it's awkward, but it's all him.
Boy, have we seen a new side of her. Things are different, and most times it's a good different. Below are a few things I've realized happens when your best friend becomes single.
1. She LOVES being single.
No really. If she wants to kiss a random person at a bar she can, and she most likely will. Most of the time I just let it happen, because let's be honest, we've all been there.
2. She finally understands the importance of Netflix and chill.
Before, she had a boyfriend she could call up basically anytime to come over and just watch Netflix and chill. Now, she doesn't have that so she has to Netflix and chill alone....
3. She likes to stay out way later than before.
When we go out, we go all out. Wherever we are, we are there until they make us leave.
4. She understands your boy struggles now.
Your potential bae opened your cute Snapchat and didn't reply? She understands how annoying that is. You see that cute boy at the bar and don't know what the heck to do? She helps you jump out of your shell because not too long ago she had to adjust and figure out how to do that herself.
5. You both have more drinks bought for you.
This is probably the most positive part about it. As you can tell, I am not the hot friend in the group, nor the most outgoing, so I barely give guys at the bar the time of day. My newly single friend is pretty much the opposite, so we get free drinks and shots almost every time we are out together. It's pretty much amazing.
6. She has more time to hang out with you.
Overall, we have become closer since she has become single. This could be seen as a sign that before we weren't great friends, but I beg to differ. She has more free time, and I have an abundance of it. So, we are able to hang out way more often than before.
7. She realizes it's a lot harder than it looks.
Sure, all of us single ladies look like we are having the time of our lives and love having no one to answer to at all times of the day, but Crystal has finally seen the other side of that life. Every once in a while, you just get lonely. You want a cuddle buddy on a Friday night or just want good male company during a meal (oh, and for him to pay for it). It's not very easy to find that these days.
So for all of my single ladies out there:
First of all, props to you because I know the struggle it can be sometimes. Second, when your friend becomes single, go ahead and expect most, if not all, of these things to happen. Lastly, make sure you are there for your newly single friend. Let her take you out more than you normally would like and be there for her when she just needs some company. In the end, you'll probably grow closer and can both take on the single world together!
