When You Don't Know What's Next

Here's a hint: there is no plan.

When You Don't Know What's Next
Sara Ruggieri

We've been led astray, guys. We've been hoodwinked from day one. We started what we thought was the rest of our lives in a dorm on a college campus, then all of a sudden they shoved a diploma in our hands, patted our shoulder and said, "Good luck getting a job with your bachelor's degree."

Our yearbooks always had the same thing written in them, "I know you'll be great in whatever you do" and, while it's nice and something we like to hear, what exactly are we doing?

It's an unspoken, yet linear path--an alignment of all our school work, our extracurricular activities, our finals. It's supposed to be graduate college and get a job. But more and more of us are packing up our college apartments, looking around the empty rooms and asking, "What's next?"

Around 98 percent of us most likely have no clue. It was easier for our parents and a lot easier for our grandparents but it's our turn up to bat and I for one am too afraid to swing — I'd rather not get hit by the ball.

To paint a picture of how painful it was for me to move out of my college town — I cried at least six times the day before. The last time I cried that much I'd broken up with my ex-boyfriend. When I told my mom, she said something that made so much sense: "Honey, you're going through a grieving process, this is a part of your life that you're losing." While not a major tragedy, she's right. That's exactly what all of us are going through right now.

Some of our friends are lucky enough to be offered jobs right away, some are moving directly into their own place. And some of us have to move back in with our parents, and back to sharing one car and back to losing all of our privacy.

It sucks. It really, really sucks. But here's something our parents have literally been trying to tell us; something we as millennials pride ourselves on ignoring--life isn't easy. Things will not fall into our laps because it's "fair" and we think it should. There is no plan unless you make one.

Our lives aren't over, we're just beginning on a bigger, scarier and more exciting adventure than ever. We just have to work for it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
