My grandfather always said there are two times in your life that you have the world at your fingertips, when you are a child and when you are in college, and both times you don’t realize it.
Recently, I have noticed as my friends, and even myself think about the future- it is never in the bright, exciting way we used to. Now, when people think about the future there is this fear that surrounds it as well. College students are so bogged down by the idea of the future- it is actually crippling their future. What happened to the days of wanting to grow up and be an astronaut or a dancer (shout out to you dance majors for making that dream come true)? Those goals we set as kids are gone, but why can’t they be a reality?
I'm here to argue, that they can. Ladies and gentleman, I’m here to tell you, you can be whatever you want to be still. Is there a job you think is too far out of your reach, or across the country so you think you cannot possibly apply? Go for it. College is the time to figure out what you want to do, but also the place that if you do not know, it’s okay.
Take in what is happening around you. Look at the support system of your peers and your family (probably all who wish they were in college again). These are the days to cherish, not to stress over. The future won’t look so bleak when you realize you have the world at your fingertips.
The idea of growing up has suddenly become one of stress and great fear, but it does not have to be that way. People are spending so much of their time worrying about the future, that they forget to enjoy the present.
So enjoy it! Go out and do things that make you happy. Apply for a job that you think you will love, because it’s okay if it isn’t the top paying job in the world- if it is what you want to do- do it. Enjoy these moments because they are the memories you will look back on. People say it all the time, but college goes fast. Don’t let it get away from you.
So, what do you really want to be when you grow up? Whatever it is, do it.
