What It's Like When All Of Your Friends Are In A Sorority

Ten things every GDI knows all too well.

What It's Like When All Of Your Friends Are In A Sorority
Francesca Svoboda

At school, most of my friends are involved with the Panhellenic sororities on campus. When all of your friends are in a sorority and you're a GDI, you might be able to relate to some of the following.

1. When you're with your friends, you're always considered a part of the sorority.

"Are you in ___?" Nope. "Oh, so you're in ___?" Also no.

2. You find yourself with no plans when your friends have mixers.

Sports theme? Borrow my baseball T-shirt! Greek goddess? I have the perfect headband for that! Catalina wine mixer? I definitely have a sun hat in here somewhere. The FOMO is real but at least your mixer-appropriate attire is getting some good use.

3. You're constantly told, "I wish you joined ___!"

I never know what to say to this. Honestly, usually I just awkwardly smile.

4. Keeping up with all the g-bigs/bigs/twins/littles/g-littles is hard.

"My twin and I are getting lunch tomorrow." "I love my little's new hair." "Have you seen my g anywhere?" Very hard to keep up with, but I think I'm getting the hang of it (sort of).

5. You know a lot more than you think.

Just from hanging out with my sorority friends I've learned a lot about their sorority, their philanthropy and other attributes like their colors or symbols.

6. When they're having a fundraising event, you have no one to go with.

I've gone early to so many events with my sorority friends because I had no one else to go with when the event actually started. Girls in the sorority who don't know me would ask, "Wait, are you in our sorority?" No, just here to have a good time.

7. When everyone "throws what they know," you stand there blankly.

I guess I'll go with the peace sign?

8. Rainy days are a blessing and a curse.

Although your sorority friends are now much easier to spot across the campus center in their rain jackets, you are almost always sopping wet in a hoodie. Ya win some ya lose some.

9. The cute shirts.

When I wear a softball tournament T-shirt from 2009 to class, I kinda look like I just rolled out of bed. My sorority friends, on the other hand, have a multitude of cute shirts in all different colors and designs.

10. The "sorority" pose.

Whether or not you're in one, we all have it mastered by now.

Either way, I love my friends no matter what sorority they're in or what letters they wear across their chest. I am truly blessed to have met them and that they are my best friends for life. But, as for me, I'll always remain a GDI.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
