There comes a point when we all have to start “adulting.” What is “adulting?”
Adulting is when we decide that sitting in a circle with a beer in your hand laughing with friends is not worth the long headache at work the next. It is when work becomes more important than sleeping in a bathing suit because you were at the lake all night. There comes a point in a young adult’s life when we realize that life is getting serious and we need to start setting our priorities straight.
Either my friends have just recently graduated college or are very close too. I graduate in December and it is starting to really kick in; I have to start adulting. We have to set the crap aside and focus on our future. It is a lot harder than it seems and sometimes scary.
No more crap-jobs. No more beer-pong on Tuesday nights. No more eating cereal with a fork because there are no clean spoons. OK, maybe not the last one.
A close friend of mine just graduated and after six months being unemployed, he finally has an amazing big kid job. He starts working at BP in Chicago next week and it is very exciting. It makes me think about what my life is going to be like after graduated. Am I going to interview for a big company like BP? Will I pack up and move away from my family for work?
Let me just say this now, applying for a job is a job itself. Major adulting.
I am not saying that all adulting is negative and scary. It is very exciting. As young adults, we look forward to turning 21, graduating college and starting our careers. That sensational feeling when we finally reach all of our goals is amazing.
I found a job that makes me happy. I look forward going to work and I am excited to further expand my career. The nice part is when you find a job that lets you slack on adulting a little bit. I literally played ping-pong in the office the other day while we were brainstorming marketing ideas.
That is when adulting is your only option. When you are stuck between college and real life. Life after college is adulting. We become fully responsible of our actions and our choices shape who we will be.
Adulting is unavoidable. It happens to everyone and there is no way around it. Some people adult sooner than others. It all depends on when you decide to stop staring at the sidewalk and start looking down the road.
