Everyday in the media we see a lot of celebrity drama. But the majority of it is the claimed "cat fights" between female celebrities. People seem to not get enough and often quote these events as another example of why women are too emotional to have important jobs. But, not only is this petty to think, there is always more to the story.
It all goes back to how girls are raised. As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie says in her famous speech "We Should All Be Feminists", "We raise girls to see each other as competitors. Not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing. But for the attention of men." Think about all of the books and movies you watch that feature teenage girls. There is always the bitchy, slutty girl that is competition for a male in their lives that is painted in a bad light. And then we always hear that famous line, "I'm/ you're not like other girls." What's so wrong with other girls? Why do we suddenly have to have that special girl that is perfect for the man?
The problem is not biological. Girls grow up seeing that that they are regarded as highly emotional and fragile beings. As said before this is often how media portrays the women. We never see Ryan Reynolds and Zac Efron get into a cat fight, but once Selena Gomez doesn't say happy birthday to one of her friends it's suddenly the biggest girl fight of the week. Young girls see this and think that animosity between other girls is normal.
Recently, Lilly Singh, a famous content creator on YouTube came out with her initiative #GirlLove. She always has believed in girl love but now has started a conscious effort to bring into light the common problem. She wants girls to not see each other as competition but rather equals that together can rise above the bigger picture. Instead of fighting over the recent new guy at school, they should focus on their education and rising above the double standards they face.
In the end, girls need to band together. There also needs to be realization that other girls are not bitchy or slutty competitors but instead equals. We were not put on this earth to please men and we don't need to spend our time trying to gain the attention of them. Instead we have better things to do like find jobs, gain a better education, and change the world.
