It's officially December, and winter break and New Year's will be here before we know it. 2017 is coming to a close and as I've been driving around Arlington, I see bright red and green lights on every street and inflatable Santa's and reindeer in front yards. Starbucks has their red cups and beloved holiday drinks. Seems like a perfect winter, but there's something seriously missing here. The weather. Of course, no one can really predict the weather perfectly and I'm no meteorologist but shouldn't it be cold in December? This week, the weather was all over the place. On Monday, I wore jeans and a long sleeve shirt with a jacket and by the end of the day I felt like I had dressed for winter in mid-spring. It was warm outside, and it felt almost humid. Tuesday, I wore shorts and brought a light jacket with me. I was completely comfortable as I saw many other kids at school wearing dresses, shorts and t-shirts.
Of course I like nice weather, but I was anxiously waiting for the cold winter to really start. I want the snow to start and wind to blow my hair sideways when I step outside. I was my nose and cheeks to be bright red when I walk inside after being in the cold for a little while. I want to step outside every morning and see my breath in front of me. With all these mid 50's temperatures, I'm starting to think Arlington won't be seeing the white Christmas they're dreaming of. While I'm over here complaining about how it isn't cold enough, most of the people I know are perfectly okay with the weather. They like being able to wear shorts in December and not freeze during the walk from their front door to the car.
A question I get asked a lot when talking about college is, "Why do you want to go somewhere that's so cold?" People seem to be completely dumbfounded that I would willingly go somewhere where it snows like crazy and gets to 20 below in the real winter months. I don't know if it's the whipping wind or big snowflakes, but winter always makes me incredibly happy. I love sledding, snowball fights, making snow angels, hot chocolate with marshmallows, hot coffee in the morning, fuzzy socks and fireplaces, I could go on and on. In case you couldn't tell, winter is my favorite season. I'm not sure what it is, but something about throwing the first snowball of the year or making a snowman just makes me smile and laugh probably more than I should. With December starting up, I can only hope the temperatures will soon be going down and the snow will start falling.
