To My Friends Who've Lost Their Motivation

If you've lost your drive, it may be time to refocus on what you want out of life.

Everyone goes through seasons where you just need a break from the routine you've established in your daily life. But what does it mean if even after you've stepped away from the mundane you just can't pick it back up and keep going?

I've been asking myself this question since I came back from winter break and couldn't find the work ethic that got me through the fall semester. I knew that after about a month of vacation I should be ready to get back to it, but I wasn't.

I went back and as time passed, I felt like I was barely moving and that was okay with me. I did the work, I went to class, but really all I did was look forward to the weekend when I didn't have to think or plow through my work so I could go to sleep.

There were moments where I watched deadlines roll past without batting an eye - something that would have made my fall semester self hyperventilate into a paper bag - and all I could do was wonder what had changed in myself. I managed to make it through the spring semester with my GPA intact, only livening up when I came face to face with dead week, and at the prospect of my friends coming home for the summer.

It wasn't until a few weeks into this summer that the question regarding the lack of motivation popped into my head again. I thought about all of the time I had spent doing nothing with my renewed freedom and thought "why don't I care the way I did before?"

For me, it meant that I'd become so subdued by the day to day patterns of my life that I'd lost sight of what I was working towards, what I want in my life, and who I want to become.

I was hiding under my covers from the harder parts of school, work, and my other goals because I had forgotten the joy that I found in them.

So to my friends who find themselves in similar situations or asking that same question, take a moment to remind yourself of what you want out of your life. Make a list and really think about the steps that are necessary to get you to where you want to be in your life. In every seemingly mundane action, there is purpose. Remember that you are in complete control of the course of your life and that you have the power to change it at any point.

Let your motivation stem from the dreams that are striving towards making reality each day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
