Hello, readers! I've decided that we should talk about a more important topic this week. I'll be honest, it wasn't too long ago that the only reason I ever knew about any kind of world news was if it popped up on one of my social media feeds. However, I've found myself becoming very interested in world news lately and because of who I am, I'm also very in tune with celebrity gossip. If you put those two together, you're going to get a nasty and confusing mix. What's real? What news would we rather listen to? Which news should we be listening to? These are all important concerns, but the real question is:
So far, this weekend, trending topics in the world news have been the airport attack in Istanbul, the hostages taken in Bangladesh, the continuing rise of human trafficking and many more sad, terrifying stories. That's what they are to us: stories. It eventually turns into the world tuning out the most important stories that ultimately will affect us or the people around us.
Now for the alternative: this weekend in pop culture and celebrity news. The topics include Tom and Taylor's budding romance, Louis Tomlinson fighting for custody and even Kim Kardashian's use of butt pads. This is the news that many of our younger generations are learning about. This is what our youth is deciding to place their stock in, and we are seemingly allowing it to happen with no counter actions.
When we place this significance on these celebrities and their lives, we place less substance on what is really important. We allow ourselves to forget about the dangers of the world or the people who are suffering. Instead we decide to place importance on the lives and private matters of those in the public eye by way of music, movies, reality TV, etc. By doing this, we let our generation and the ones younger than us feel as if this is what they should strive for and if they aren't following in the footsteps of these celebrities, they feel as if they are a failure. Instead, we should be following in the footsteps of those before us who have paved the way for a better life.
We all feel that there is nothing that we can do for the tragedies occurring in the world, and even if that may be true for the most of us, it's not true for everyone. It only takes one person to change the world. It only takes one person to post about the news or bring awareness to an issue that needs it. If we all became more interested in what's happening in our world today, our future could become a lot brighter than it has been in the past or is now.
I'll be the first one to admit that I love to stay involved in the new celebrity gossip, but I also strive to know more about the world and how we can keep it progressing forward instead of back. I encourage all of you to take an interest as well because this is our world.
