In the film industry, there is only one awards show that means anything, and that is the Oscar's. That little golden man is something that actors and directors alike aspire to hold up during their careers. The same goes for the golden record player handed out at the Grammy's. But as Kanye proved by starting to walk up on stage a couple weeks ago, there is something wrong with these famed award ceremonies. Yes, Beck provided the world with a quality album, but had anyone heard it or known about it before his name was announced on that stage? I understand that Kanye's comments after the show may have been uncalled for, but there was truth in one thing he said. And that is that everyone couldn't stop talking about Beyonce's album; she released the album out of the blue, but it dominated the radio stations for months and months. Given how big a role social media plays in everyday life, why does it have no place in either award ceremony?
Yes, this year there are many movies that were successful in the box office, but many of the movies that are up for "Best Picture" were not widely released for everyone to see them. It is the same argument as with the Beck album. If few people know about it, then why should it have relevancy with the huge role social media plays in our everyday lives. Let me be clear, I am not saying that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles should be up for any award, but I think that popularity needs to play an equal role in the voting process. While I personally don't want to accept it, it is time fore these award ceremonies to account for the changing times. Hopefully, there will come a time when this changes, but for now, we will have to wait and see awards go to the unknown.
