What’s Foam Party?

The short answer: something amazing.

What’s Foam Party?
Hola Yessica

A couple of weekends ago, I had the opportunity to go to a foam party. I heard stories during my freshman year about how fun and wonderful they can be, but I didn’t have the chance to experience one until recently.

To be honest, I was kind of nervous about going to it. I wasn’t nervous about the party itself since I had been to other parties in college, but I was nervous about the actual foam. I’m a pretty short person, and MANY people told me I was going to spend the whole night completely covered in foam. It didn’t sound super enjoyable to me.

However, I was still excited due to the stories I heard about it before, so I went with an open mind. Honestly, it was amazing. At first, it was kind of awkward because the bubbles were only about a foot tall for a while. They weren’t high enough to do anything with, but there were enough bubbles there to be noticeable.

Once the bubbles got about three feet tall, that’s when the real fun started. People were picking up clumps of bubbles, dropping them on people, and shoving them into their friends. It was silly and kind of childish, but that’s what made it so great.

There was one moment when I stopped for a second, and I just looked around. I was surrounded by future engineers, bio technicians, vets, etc., and I was watching them just happily play in bubbles. At WPI, we have such an intense course load with our seven-week term systems, and it was nice getting to see people relax and enjoy themselves.

When I was telling people about foam party afterwards, they seemed hesitant. They would ask, “Doesn’t the foam get gross?” In my opinion, I don’t think it’s any grosser than other parties. All parties are gross to a certain extent because there are crowds of sweaty people in a tight space. If anything, at least the room smelt nice from the soap. Plus, the bubbles in the foam kept getting popped, so new foam was consistently made, which meant that you weren’t in the same foam all night.

Despite how amazing foam party was, there were two major cons in my opinion. First, I and a bunch of other people caught a pretty bad cold during it. We could have caught a cold at any party, but being wet for hours probably didn’t help the situation. Second, the foam destroyed my skin. I definitely should have moisturized beforehand, but at least I know to do this the next time.

Overall, I had an awesome time at foam party. I realized that my nervousness was unnecessary because the foam was still extremely fun even when I was “drowning” in it. Plus, I wasn’t completely covered in it for very long, so it wasn’t a big deal. I highly recommend that if people ever have a chance to go to a foam party, then they should go!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
