Yes, I watched the entirety of the Harry Potter Weekend on ABC Family. No, I should not be openly admitting this. But it was for research purposes…I swear! Anyways, am I the only one who sees the similarities between Hogwarts houses and Greek houses at DePauw?
Although I consider myself more of a Slytherin, every house can all learn a few lessons from the famous Gryffindor, Dumbledore:
“Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.”
DePauw is a school that really values diversity, but sometimes we forget our similarities. While we may hail from different places and backgrounds, it's important remember our common goals: a great education and a fun time! We share even more similarities with our house members as we support the values of our organization.
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
Greek life provides a network of support to members. In return, sorority women and men should repay these efforts by upholding the reputation of their house. Always make sure to act in accordance to your organization’s beliefs and remember: you’re always wearing your letters.
"There are all kinds of courage," said Dumbledore, smiling. "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends.”
Doesn’t this just sound like an anti-hazing campaign? Because of our large Greek community, hazing will always be a risk. Sometimes it can be hard to stand up to our brothers and sisters, but older members should support new recruits instead of knocking them down.
“We are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.”
No house wants to air their dirty laundry to the rest of the campus. It’s always better to keep inter-house conflict as just that- in the house. Putting up a united front with your sisters and brothers will make your house one to be admired.
“What happened down in the dungeons between you and Professor Quirrell is a complete secret, so, naturally the whole school knows.”
DePauw is a small school and news spreads quickly throughout the student body, like Hogwarts. And just like at Hogwarts, what happens in the dungeons-or fraternity basements- doesn’t always stay in the dungeons!
Dumbledore always knows best!
