Picking a college outside of the state in which you reside in can be risky. Coming into it, you already know that you will be pushed out of your comfort zone, forced to learn the culture of the state, and try to make it your home. These are some questions or comments that you will most certainly get if you go out of state.
"Wait, where are you from?"
The common question. People won't understand why you chose their state out of all of the other ones. They might even be confused if they don't know geography of U.S.A.
"So if you're not from here, why did you pick this college?"
Sometimes, there might not be any valid reason to why you choose the college you are attending. I always say that it's because of my major and how the college has a good program for it. Don't worry if you say, "I don't know," just let them know that you're still trying to figure that part out.
"How far away is that?"
This is the most common question I get after someone asks where I am from. Let me tell you, the question grows annoying fast, but remember that they are just curious, and it's easy to answer.
"Do you drive or fly here?"
I've never understood why this question is important, but people apparently need to know the answer. Hopefully by you telling them how far away it is, they can gather enough information to make an assumption to whether you drive or fly.
"So do you have family here?"
A painful question, as you remember that your parents are hours away. I say no, because I don't have any family here, but I also tell them that I am hoping to find my family here at college. Boom. That will shut them up.
"Are your parents okay with you being so far away?"
Honestly, parents are hardly okay with their children being an hour away. My mom has always supported my decisions, and she knew she couldn't keep me locked up in my hometown. (I guess she could have, but someone would eventually notice I was missing). Parents will always have a hard time when you go to college, but to be honest, that is the least of my concerns when it comes to college. Sorry, not sorry.
P.S, I miss my mom everyday.
"Wow, that must be expensive."
It may make your eyes roll as it is obvious it can be expensive, but don't let that bother you. Some people have this type of reaction. Just agree with them and move on. No one likes remembering how expensive it is, so don't dwell on it for a long time. You can worry about the money situation another day.
These questions will be asked, a lot. With every new person you meet, you will get asked at least one of these questions. Don't worry though, soon enough the answers will be automatic to you. Have fun in the new state you will be residing in!
