What You Get From Rushing And Recruiting
Lina Jackson

When a girl decides to rush a sorority, there are a lot of different benefits you recieve; however, I want to focus on the rushing process itself. I also want to focus on the benefits when you’re on the other side of recruitment and you’re the girl recruiting, helping guide girls to find their fit and home. It’s a lot of fun, not always easy, and can be stressful from both sides. However, it’s an experience you won’t ever forget and helps build those great college memories.

  • You make friends: If you’re a girl going through rush, you’re meeting other girls that are rushing as well. You’re usually excited to tell these girls in your group how your last party went and get all giddy when they are also set on the same house as you. You are also getting to meet girls who are already a part of a sorority and start making connections with them.
  • Friends when you’re on the recruiting side: You’re meeting new girls who could potentially find a sisterhood within your home. You are also strengthening the bond with the sisters you already have through workshops and recruitment events.
  • It takes your mind off of things: Recruitment is usually held the first week of classes or the week before class starts. Therefore, it helps you forget about all of those first week nerves. You’re making friends, keeping yourself busy, and having fun, so you forget about that really hard class you’re taking this semester or how mean your professor looks. It really helps you to immerse yourself in the college scene and makes you feel just a little bit better about things.
  • Strengthening bonds when recruiting: Recruiting takes a lot of preparation and planning, so you’re spending a lot of time with your sisters. Typically spending all day together for at least a few days straight helps to strengthen or rebuild relationships with sisters. If you haven’t seen some over the course of the summer, you’re reunited when you start prepping for the new recruitment season and get to have fun with them through the process.
  • You get to play dress up: If you’re rushing, you get dressed up because you want to look cute for the different parties you have to go to. If you’re recruiting, you get to dress up with your sisters and look cute for the girls coming in to meet you. Plus, it’s fun sometimes just to be a girl and do your hair and makeup and feel confident.
  • You find a home: At the end of this experience, you are either finding your home or helping another girl find hers. There’s nothing better than finding where you feel like you fit and having girls you barely knew a week ago welcome you with open arms. It’s even better when you get to be the girl welcoming a new sister home.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
