As time goes on, words are added to and forgotten about in the dictionary. It is not rare for generations to take already existing words and change their meaning to something completely different. Lately, I've been reading a lot of posts on the internet and couldn't help but think, " what if the words in this sentence still had their original meaning?" Let's just say a lot of people would be talking about literature. Here are a few words that no longer mean what they did when I was young.
Play
When I was young: Let’s go play outside. We have to continue being Power Puff girls.
Now: Play me back on Trivia Crack! It’s been your turn since yesterday.
Cloud
When I was young: White fluffy thing in the sky.
Now: Holds all your information.
Troll
When I was young: A little mythological creature that lived under a bridge.
Now: Someone who bullies and says vulgar things to another on the internet.
Salty
When I was young: a taste.
Now: feeling annoyed.
Thirsty
When I was young: To need a drink.
Now: begging for attention.
Lit
When I was young: Literature.
Now: a really awesome thing or time.
Ship
When I was young: A boat.
Now: loving the way two people look together and wanting them to date.
Going viral
When I was young: a sickness going around.
Now: becoming famous over something you posted on the internet.
Dab
When I was young: a light tap.
Now: a dance move.
Man buns
When I was young: What one may call a man’s butt.
Now: a hairstyle.
Loop
When I was young: a circular shape.
Now: having something replay automatically and numerous times.
Obviously, these words still have their original meanings but it is weird to see how, through generations, things can change.
