What We Really Learn In College

Because let's face it, classroom knowledge won't get us very far.

What We Really Learn In College

Sitting at home this summer preparing for my last semester in college has definitely got me thinking, what have I learned these past three years?

Everyone knows that college is four years (…or more) dedicated to gaining the knowledge necessary to make it in the real world. What we don’t realize until we get here is that most of what we learn does not come from three hours a week sitting in political theory.

Our best lessons are learned in the arms of our best friend after a bad break up, during those desperate calls home and even crying in a bar bathroom. What we really learn in college.…

We didn’t get here on our own. Someone, somewhere helped us get where we are. Whether it was our parents or an awesome mentor, someone was behind all of our achievements.

This is something we quickly realize during our first years of living on our own. When you can’t figure out how to cook anything but noodles, that feeling of independence is gone pretty quickly. There has always been someone there for us when we needed it most, and luckily they always will be.

Nothing lasts forever, and that’s fine.

Relationships, that life-long streak of straight A’s, etc. In college we begin to realize that forever is a long time, and sometimes that one night of fun really was worth getting our first B. We also begin to realize that some relationships and friendships are meant to be outgrown, and that is a good thing. It means we are growing and changing, and that’s how it is supposed to be.

The best years of our lives are not in college.

College is a blast and an incredible growing experience. However, there is so much more out there! Whether it's marriage and kids or a killer career, the best years of our lives are still to come.

If you find yourself crying over your wasted college years with that ex-boyfriend, remember…life goes on and it only gets better! If you think college is the peak of your life, you are selling yourself short. Once you’ve realized this, looking forward to the future has never felt better.

We will be okay.

If there’s one thing we truly discover during our college years, it's that everything is going to be okay. All those nights spent crying over boys, grades and big mistakes have taught us our most valuable lesson. With our failures and disappointments come the realization that we can make it through just about anything.

College is the greatest learning and growing experience there is. Through the good and the bad, we find out who we are and just how much we can accomplish. We begin to understand how important the people who helped us get here really are.We learn that we will grow and change and that sometimes means leaving people behind. Most importantly, we start to see what’s coming after college and how bright the future looks. So, let’s get out there and enjoy every second of it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
