What We Miss Most About Snow Days

Being an adult is full of responsibility, but here's a few reminders of just how enjoyable a snow day used to be.

What We Miss Most About Snow Days

Growing up, one of the best moments was finding out that you have a snow day in the morning. There is no better feeling that knowing you can stay in bed till whenever you want, go out and play in the snow, and then have a nice hot chocolate when you're done. This is another thing that we take for granted and then grow up to say we want it back.

Now, we hear about a snow day we think "Ugh. Snow, shoveling, and traffic." Everything takes a little more work while having a snow day as an adult.

Here are some of the top things we miss most about having snow days as a child:

1. Waiting all night to get the call about school being cancelled.

Whether you have a sibling or you are an only child, waiting in front of the tv/phone with a friend or sibling is the best part. Your heart is pounding out of your chest, just hoping to get a day off. You refuse to do any homework due the next day just because you think it'll make you have a snow day. You wear your pajama's backwards to bed or say your prayers a month in advance, and promise God that you will never ever lie again. The things you did for a snow day was limitless, but then when you finally got the call...planning for the next day began.

2. Waking up the next morning.

First off, if you didn't know if school was cancelled or not this was the moment. Your mom wakes you up and before you even open your eyes, "Do I have school?" If the answer was yes, you begged and begged to stay home. But if the answer was No, it was like new life was born again. Automatically you would jump out of bed and run over to the window to see how much snow had fallen. It was like a playground surrounding your house. You go downstairs, get dressed in your snow gear and go out into what looked like a big white world.

3. An Igloo was almost impossible to build, so snowman it is.

You have these crazy ideas to build something so amazing that you can live in it for the rest of your life. You start to build an igloo and after 10 minutes you get cold and go inside. Even though your mom tells you its only been 10 minutes, you are freeezing and you think she has the time wrong... felt like an hour to me. You get fully undressed and go downstairs where it's nice and warm. 15 minutes later.. "Mommy, can I go back out?" You get dressed again and go back out, but this time to build a snowman.

4. The movie snowman's aren't real.. are they?

Once you start to build your new best friend, you realize just how hard it is to actually build. Perfect circles for the body and head?? How do I do that. But you are determined so you end up piling snow into a mount, putting 2 eyes and a scarf on it and call it day. Back inside..but this time hot chocolate is waiting.

5. Hot Chocolate!!!

For some reason, Hot chocolate on a snow day taste 10x better. You sit at the table and start to warm up your hands and tummy with big gulps of hot chocolate. Mini marshmallow's, chocolate bits, and whip cream... for breakfast? Oops.. Its a snow day there are no rules!!

6. Sledding.

Any form of sliding down a big hill extremely fast is somehow intriguing to children. So, off to the biggest hill you can find in your neighborhood with some form of plastic to sled on. And its all fun and games until you have to walk back up to the top of the hill or you crash into another kid. Another snow event short lived.

7. Pajamas and TV.

If having fun outside in the snow isn't what you like to do on your snow days, then spending the day in pajama's and watching movies with your parents is usually the second most popular. No better feeling wearing pajamas and watching movies all day.

8. If your snow day lands on a Friday or a Monday.

A three day snow day?! Best weekend ever!! But by day 3, you're tired and your body hurts from pushing mounds of snow to different parts of your "Igloo." By this point, you are read for school to start again and you're looking forward to the next snow day.

Having enjoyable snow day's has now turned into a child's dream and an adults nightmare, but this was just a little reminder of how much a some snow can make a child's day. While we are in the midst of snow fall and struggling to get around town, remember all the kids at home drinking their big cups of hot chocolate, living their lives to the fullest. And maybe if you are feeling generous and a little childish, ask your little siblings, cousins, or neighbors to come outside and help make that igloo that they have been dreaming off... and you've been dreaming of too.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
