If you're anything like me, summer can be a a mixture of many things. Maybe you aren't going on any trips, but your calendar definitely isn't empty. The only problem is trying to figure out what to do in your free time. Luckily, there are plenty of things to look forward to on the big screen this summer!
1. Disney Channel Original Movie Marathon - May 27 - 30 on Disney Channel
4 days, 51 of your favorite childhood movies, hours of feels. This memorial day weekend, gather your friends and your binge-watching essentials because with Disney airing 51 of its best DCOMs in recognition of its 100 movie, it is going to be a good time. What's better than High School Musical, Zenon and Camp Rock, all in the same weekend?!
2. NBA Finals - Starting Thursday June 2 on CBS
Whether you've been keeping up with your favorite team the entire season, or you finally have time on your hands to get into the biggest week of the season, the NBA Finals are a great excuse to throw a party, have some friends over or just chill. But don't chill too much, because with these teams you never know what can happen. *fingers crossed the Thunder wins it all*
2. The Tony Awards - Sunday June 7 on CBS
This year's ceremony will mark 70 years of recognizing Broadway's greatest shows, and it will be nothing less than exciting. With the rise of record breaking Hamilton, nominated for a historic 16 awards, as well as other newcomers like Something Rotten and revivals like Fiddler on the Roof, this year's show expected to be great. And James Corden as host? If you enjoy theater at all, you can't forget to tune in to the Tony Awards.
3. "Finding Dory" - at a theater near you July 17
13 years later, the sequel to Finding Nemo has been widely anticipated by children and adults alike. You can find a kid to take with you to the movies, but let's be real, you'd see it by yourself anyways. Ellen DeGeneres and Disney are a movie match made in heaven.
4. Shark Week - June 26 through July 3 on Discovery Channel
In the spirit of all things summer, Shark Week is a national treasure. Jaws marathons, documentaries of shark attacks and the possibility of super sharks are all enough to keep us watching the full week. And right before 4th of July, Shark Week is basically a holiday in and of itself. Go get yourself a shark-themed Slurpee from 7-11 and do your duty as an American by watching.
5. Independence Day - July 4
This may be a no brainer, but when you aren't really doing anything, it's easy to forget for a while that you actually have something to do. I don't have to tell you why celebrating the Fourth of July is so great, it's just something we all do. Start planning those backyard cookouts and get excited!
6. "Ghostbusters" - in theaters near you July 15
The all-female revival of one of the best things to come out of the 80's is coming out this summer, and you can't miss it. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mckinnon and Leslie Jones star in the film, showing not only that girls can be just as awesome at fighting ghosts, but just as funny.
7. Republican National Convention - July 18 - 21, Cleveland OH
After months of voting, this summer the GOP convention will announce who is to be the official Republican nominee for this year's presidential election. Most signs point to Donald Trump as the outspoken winner, but who knows. One can hope...
8. Democratic National Convention - July 25 - 28, Philadelphia PA
Bernie or Hillary, it's anyone's guess as to who will win the presidential nomination at this year's Democratic convention. While Hillary has been killing the polls and the voting booths, Bernie's continued presence in the race is a testament to his influence over the young voting demographic, and his chances of snagging the nomination. Tune in July 25-28 to see who wins the battle for the Democratic nomination, and who will enter the final stretch of the presidential election.
9. "Suicide Squad" - in theaters near you August 5
In the newest installment to the DC movie universe, DC's most popular villains team up together to...save the world? Jared Leto, Will Smith, and Ben Affleck are just a few of the a-list actors to star in what is likely to be one of the summer's biggest blockbusters. Whether you're a movie fanatic or a comic lover, Suicide Squad is expected to crush the box office, so don't miss it.
10. Summer Olympics, Rio - August 5 - 21 on NBC
Last, but certainly not least, the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janero is coming faster than we know it. After four long years of waiting for the next Olympics (because let's be honest, the Summer Olympics are better than Winter), it is finally time to cheer on the USA once again. With Michael Phelps out of retirement and the US Women's Soccer team as the reigning FIFA champions, this years games are bound to be exciting and gold-medal filled for the US. Watch out world.
