What To Expect During Your First Homecoming On The Hill

What To Expect During Your First Homecoming On The Hill

Fall on the hill can only mean one thing: Homecoming is near. Homecoming at Western Kentucky University is something so unbelievably special that it is truly hard for me to find the words to explain. But I've compiled a list to try to help out anyone who has never had the Hilltopper Homecoming experience. Between brunches and lunches, and pomping and bonding with your organization, one thing will prove to be true after your first homecoming week here. Your love for WKU will grow immensely.

1. Construction of the floats

You would be surprised at how much work goes into the floats that we parade through Bowling Green the night before the homecoming game. Preparation begins at exactly noon on the Sunday before. And when I say noon, I mean as soon as the clock strikes 12 p.m., pomping begins and doesn't end until you are literally rolling the float out of the float site. Pomping? Yes, rolling pieces of tissue paper into tiny little balls, and if anyone has ever told you they enjoy pomping, they were lying. I did a small calculation. You get roughly six days to complete your float. Since there are 24-hours in a day, everyone involved in creating a float spends an average of around 50 hours that week rolling little balls of paper. Talk about hand cramps. To me though, the greatest thing about making the float is spending so much time with your sisters/brothers/fellow pompers, that at the end of the week, you have an even stronger bond than before.

2. Big Red's Roar

Big Red's Roar is exactly what it sounds like. A very loud, very spirited, and very special night. This night happens to be my favorite night of Homecoming. After the floats are judged in front of Houchens Industries L.T. Smith Stadium, everyone marches from the campus to the square while the Bowling Green community lines the streets and cheers as all of the organizations walk by. Once everyone arrives at the square, an uproar of chants and songs begin. (They knew what they were doing when they named this event.) President Ransdell gives a speech and then homecoming winners are announced. This is the moment that everyone waits for. All of our blood, sweat and tears are proven to be worth it when they declare the winners. This is the night that your love for your university will grow.

3. The Game

Football in the south is a magical thing. Football on the hill is unprecedented. The largest event of the week is of course the football game. Drawing a large crowd of alumni and family of students, the tailgate gives an opportunity for everyone to mingle before kickoff. During halftime the marching band and color guard give a spectacular performance that leads to the revealing of the homecoming queen. Looking around the stadium and seeing the sea of red towels waving will fill you with so much pride you'll wonder why anyone ever decides to go anywhere other than here.

Homecoming week may pan out to be one of the most stressful weeks of the year, but ask anyone here, it is an experience that you wish you could relive over and over. I've said it once and I'll say it a million times more, being a Hilltopper (especially during homecoming week) is freaking awesome.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
