What To Do When Your Future Is Staring You In The Face

Sometimes it is okay if the only thing you did today was breathe.

What To Do When Your Future Is Staring You In The Face

We all have those days. We are just doing something totally normal, living our lives and then all of the sudden-WHAM- it hits us. We might be reading the newspaper, watching Netflix, drinking coffee and suddenly we realize we have to “adult” soon. We realize that at some distant time in the future, we are going to have to decide what to do with our lives.

No matter who you are or where you are in your walk of life, at some point, you have felt or feel 100% stuck. Maybe you are graduating in May, and you are afraid you have just wasted four years of your life on a major that will get you absolutely nowhere. Maybe you got rejected for a job you were looking forward to getting. Maybe you are just on a school break, and you are anticipating all of the questions that family and friends will ask you.

All of this put aside, most days, you feel easy breezy and nothing bothers you. You have an aura of “carpe diem” and “go with the flow.” You embrace “come what may” with open arms and there is no stopping what your imagination can come up with.

But, other days, like today, suddenly a lot of decisions have to be made all at once, and you scoff at the young, immature dreamer you were yesterday. Your mind is filled with questions of all kinds. What are you going to do when you graduate? Will you go to grad school? Will you have to move back in with your parents? Will you realize that working at McDonald's was your true calling and it took you four very expensive years and countless sleepless nights to realize it? Are you going to get married? What about kids? Although these thoughts are a little over the top, for a stressed out college student embarking on finals week, a new semester, etc., they can seem very real.

So the first thing to do is to breathe and realize that you are not the only one going through an internal crisis right now, whatever your situation may be. Everyone goes through a constant struggle of what to do next. It is a part of being young and realizing that the whole world is right in front of you, waiting to take on your mark.

Second is to acknowledge that a passion has been put inside of you. Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real and nine times out of ten the only thing stopping someone from doing something great is themselves. Although the saying “the world is your oyster” is a little cliché, that type of advice is true for those who are brave enough to believe it.

Third, enjoy where you are in life right now. The last thing a stressed out person needs to do is think even more about the “impending doom" they think they are about to embark on. You are never going to be in the same place in life you that you are at this exact moment, so enjoy the time you have been given with the people you have close to you right now.

Fourth, do not worry about what you cannot change. No one added a day to his or her life by worrying, and there is nothing you can do about something that you cannot physically change yourself or that you cannot do anything about right now. The best thing to do is to do what you can and then leave the rest to fate and trust that your hard work paid off.

So, you have read this article, but you are still convinced that you are going to be a complete failure in life and that all of your hard work and stress has led to nothing, and that is O.K. Sometimes if the only thing you did today was breathe, that is perfectly alright. Life works itself out in the most beautiful ways and most days, you won’t believe how it did. But surprisingly, life worked out because you cared enough to put effort into making the most out of the life you have been given.

So what do you do when your future is staring you in the face? You stare right back and get a cup of coffee. You’ve got work to do.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
