I am young. I am a woman. And I am living in a country where, in a few months, Donald Trump will be the leader. And I am scared.
I'm scared on behalf of the women before me who worked so hard to make sure women in America are at the point they are now. The women who protested for the right to vote, the women who fought for the right to a safe abortion, the women who fought for the right to birth control, the women who fought and continue to fight to end sexism, the women who fought and continue to fight to end discrimination, the women who fought and continue to fight to close the wage gap, shatter the glass ceiling, and make this an equal America where men and women are in charge.
With Donald Trump in office, I am afraid this America will cease to exist, and the accomplishments the women before me fought so hard to achieve will be forgotten.
Donald Trump being elected as the next President of the United States has taught me many things. For one, it has taught me that sexism is alive, thriving, and accepted in the United States. It has taught me that nobody will bat an eye when a man says he is entitled to grab women wherever he pleases, regardless if he has the consent to do so or not because he is rich and powerful. It has then taught me these comments will then be dismissed as "locker room talk", or, as "boys being boys".
I have learned that a woman's appearance is what matters most about her in the professional world, seeing as Donald Trump has looked past the accomplishments of Heidi Cruz, Alicia Machado, Hillary Clinton, and countless other women to criticize them on their looks, instead of recognizing their achievements.
I have been taught by America that victims of rape and sexual assault do not come forward because people will not believe them. I have then realized that these victims will be called liars, sluts, promiscuous, and many other degrading names before people will believe she is assaulted.
I have learned the fact that even if a victim does come forward, her rapist will have no consequences for his actions if he is a man in power. I was then taught that people will laugh in the victim's face as her rapist is elected to the highest power of this country, only for the victim to be reminded over and over again that people Do. Not. Believe. Her.
America has taught me many things in regards to this election. But the biggest lesson I have learned is this: women will always come second to men. It does not matter our level of experience, it does not matter our qualifications, we will always come second to a man.
The most qualified candidate in presidential history, who was a woman, lost to a man with absolutely no political experience.
We will always come second. And for the next four years, I fully believe Donald Trump will make sure we do.
