A little over two months ago I embarked on one of the most interesting journeys I have had to this day. Being an Odyssey staff writer. It has been an incredible journey thus far, through all the ups and downs, writer's block and learning how to unlearn the Oxford comma, I have enjoyed it all.
I initially began writing for Odyssey when I came across an article about 7 Harsh Realities Millennials Need to Learn. I read it and was incredibly annoyed and irritated. So I wrote a dissent on Facebook. I has a friend who was an Odyssey writer who told me I should submit my dissent as an article. So I contacted our amazing editor, Shelby, and now here I am.
So here are some things I have learned from Odyssey:
1. Your Opinions Matter
I have always been an opinionated person. Anyone who knows me knows that statement to be true. However, I have been taught that sometimes it is better to keep your opinions to yourself. Well, sometimes you just can't do that. Having an outlet where you can articulate your opinions is important. Odyssey provides that outlet. Writing for the Odyssey provides the chance to write how you feel and articulate those feelings. It lets you review those thoughts and make sure that every word is what you want to say.
2. People Aren't Going to Like Everything You Write
Sometimes people don't like your opinions. It happens. You can't please everyone. I understand that what I write may not be everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay. The Odyssey has a huge platform full of diverse writers and opinions. It is a great place to see millennials share their thoughts on everything from their favorite foods, jobs they've worked and even their political choices. There is something here for everyone.
3. Some Days You Won't Have Anything to Say
Writer's block is a bitch and a half. Trust me. It is a pain in the ass. There have been several weeks where I am unable to find a topic that will motivate me to write an article I can stand by and be proud of. Sometimes you just have to pound away at the keys and hope that something good comes out of it.
4. Writing is Art
I am a fashion designer. I also am a former thespian and musician. I have been surrounded by the arts my entire life. Writing articles and sharing your thoughts is art. It is truly a creative outlet if you make it that way.
5. Have Fun
The most important lesson is to have fun. It's not about money or even having tons of people follow your writing. It is about finding your voice and writing what you're passionate about and just having fun.
