WHAT THE F---, HUMANITY?
Are we seriously more entertained by memes and listicles than feeling inspired to make a real change to SAVE THE F--KING PLANET? In the time it takes for you to scroll through your newsfeed and comment on that beloved cat video, you could have easily figured out ways to do your small part every day. Even if I openly analyze these things, I know I'm guilty of much of it. I feel highly critical of myself when I spend an hour or more on social media "just because" and experience feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and sometimes rage. Any sort of addiction makes me feel out of control of my mind which fuels an incessant fire of urgency to do and be better.
Why are so many of us apathetic and entranced by distraction? Well. Easy. Our lives are undeniably comfortable. We've adapted to a life of convenience and commodity. We've acquiesced to the status quo. As long as your bills are paid, what do you care? American culture is a real dream and seems to be easily described with just three words headed by the Letter of the Day, M: mundanity, mediocrity, and monotony.
I see so many of us driven passionately by social and political affairs, yet how many are actually going above and beyond the sporadic rant-y post on social media or the slapping on of an "edgy" bumper sticker. Yeah, that's really working for us, isn't it?
Lowest common denominator. Simplistic thinking. An enthrallment with the shelves of syrup options for today's latte (I'll take cinnamon).
With regard to the ubiquity of dispassionate Americans, the rest of the Western world isn't too far from us on this limited vapidity versus dynamism spectrum. Humanity is winning right now, duh. Haven't you checked the news? I mean, c'mon. With rampant tragedies like mass shootings and the recent stabbings by Neo-Nazis (for quick examples), our highlight reel for 2016 is truly impressive thus far. Clearly our levels of compassion and empathy are off the charts and we have nothing to improve upon. Our hearts and minds are polished and perfected and our delightful memes are still rolling on past our fingertips with fervent gusto. They're really speaking to us, really expanding our consciousness or something.
More importantly, how are those Mossimo bikinis fitting today? Swimmingly, I'm sure. As are your knock-off Ray Ban shades... as you compulsively Snapchat your glistening hotdog legs by the poolside. And all these things are infinitely more important than wasting our energy on concern for the welfare of other human begins. This is America, after all.
Welcome to the future.
