I started watching "Grey's Anatomy" about seven years ago. I wasn't as much of a die-hard fan of the show then, but now I wouldn't dare to miss an episode in fear that I would miss something important. In 2012, when "Scandal" first aired, I was amazed with the idea that the startlingly impressive woman who writes "Grey's Anatomy" was going to be writing a television show about the political system in Washington, D.C.
Over the years, the characters that create Shondaland have taught me many things, and the lines that Shonda Rhimes' writes for them have helped me grow in many ways. Here are the three ways that they have helped me the most.
1. How to dance it out!
"Grey's Anatomy" has been there for me for many years, and I can even attest some of my decision to become a surgeon to the show. The show reveals how altruistic doctors are and how they find joy in helping people. I can't wait until I can help little kids everyday; it has been my number one dream ever since I can remember. If there is one thing that Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang have taught me, it is that you can't let things get you down. When you start to feel stressed and you begin to "get down in the dumps" you should blast your favorite song ("Where Does the Good Go" by Tegan and Sara!) and just dance it out. Have your very own 30 second dance party!
2. Stand in the sun!
Those of us who live for Thursday nights know the phrase, "stand in the sun," and know that it is common dialogue between America's own Olivia Pope and America's golden boy Jake Ballard. But, what does it really mean? It means to live life in the moment, full exposure to the time around you. It means not to pretend, but to be who you are supposed to be, and to live in the truth as it presently is and to face it, head on. So, be a gladiator in a suit, put on your white hat and stand in the sun!
3. Be your own person!
The end of "Grey's Anatomy" season 10 killed a little piece of all of us. When Dr. Cristina Yang left her person in Seattle, Wash., to move thousands of miles away, it left us all with a dark pit in our middle. But, it just shows that we don't need someone there to be our best. It is great to have someone by your side at all times, Carlee is the Cristina to my Meredith and I will always stand by that, but now that I am nine hours away and only see her once every three months now. It is hard, but we are still both doing our best working on our education! Meredith Grey is an amazing woman and doesn't need anyone there for her when she is working, as she so graciously shows after Cristina leaves. Be your own person when your person cannot be there.
Over the years, Shonda Rhimes has taught me many things, but the three that I have listed above are the ones that I will carry with me forever. I wanted to thank her for helping me grow as a person and for giving me these lessons to live by.
Be kind, say yes to the things that frighten you, dance it out, stand in the sun and be your own person!
