1. Going to class
This really should be the only thing expected of us as college students because it’s hard enough; do parents not remember how incredibly difficult it is to find the motivation to sit in a boring classroom and learn every day?
2. Getting jobs and internships
Eventually, after spending all of your parents’ money, they want you to find some sort of income. At first having your own money is fun, so much fun compared to spending thousands to sit in class, that you start thinking, “I can just drop out, I could handle retail for the rest of my life.” Then you remember that no, you cannot and that you typically need at least a bachelors for a good job.
3. Working out and eating healthy
Dining halls, Panda, Chipotle, Chipotle, Chipotle… eating healthy is so hard when your heart lies elsewhere. And as for working out, Mom, I already have a job and have to actually go to class this semester, when would I ever workout? But yet, we still somehow find time to do it because we rock.
4. Being involved on campus
Parents just want the best for us and more importantly, for our resumes. So now, throw in a couple of clubs on top of Greek life involvement and you’ll be set.
5. Getting good grades
Can’t forget about this struggle. When your parents are checking in regularly to make sure you’re going to class, that isn’t all they expect. They want you to have a solid GPA as well, which means doing all of your homework and studying for your plethora of exams. And you even get to do it for at least four different classes, so much excitement.
6. Sleeping
Really that’s just not happening, sorry mom and dad.
7. Still being positive
Every parent wants to hear the voice of a happy child on the other end of the phone so sometimes we just fake it ‘till we make it. And, well at this point I consider thinking, “at least it’s better than what my life will be like in grad school” counts as being positive, right?
I think it’s worth mentioning how much we really do throughout the week. And, let’s not fail to acknowledge that we do all of these things while still managing to go out three times a week and live off of Netflix; I would say that’s pretty admirable. And yes, we all know what lies ahead with actual jobs and kids but we can still avoid that for now and just focus on how bomb we are at doing everything that we do. Bless our parents’ hearts for their high expectations of us, they just want what is best for us but sometimes it’s a lot and it’s okay to wish every week was syllabus week.
