Now when most people think of One Direction they think of a stupid boy band that makes music for young tween-aged girls. However, they're wrong. One Direction is so much more than a boy band to so many people. Being a fan of the band is more than just liking music; for One Direction fans, it's being invited into a community of people who understand why you like the boys so much. The band is just a talking point and allows people to meet others from all across the world and build strong friendships off of a shared interest.
For me personally, this band helped me and my best friend become as close as we did. In my freshman year, Rachel and I were just starting to hang out and then we stumbled across One Direction together. Together we fell in love with Louis, Harry, Niall, Liam, and at that time Zayn. To Rachel and I, One Direction will always be a large part of our lives, and our teenage years.
It probably sounds strange to most people, how much we like this band and what they stand for, but for us it's been this way for so long. Now not all of my friends are One Direction fans and that's more than fine, but for me if you know what they mean to me and then bash them in front of my face there is going to be a problem.
Zayn leaving hit many fans hard, and while it was a sad time, in the end I'm happy he left. So many things have happened between the boys and him, and I do think that Zayn is a great singer, I was always, always support Louis, Harry, Liam and Niall over him.
It's extremely sad to me to think that as a band they may be breaking up. Back in November 2015, the boys started their over a year long hiatus. At first, I honestly believe that that is all it was, just a break for them to enjoy time with their friends and families, as well as work on different projects. But as time is progressing I truly feel that this is the end. Especially after the music video for their song History was released. Now with Louis being a father, Harry possibly starring in a movie, and Niall and Liam having the time of their lives just living and being out of the spotlight, I don't see the coming back anytime soon.
As sad as it is that an era of my life seems to be ending, I will forever be grateful for those four idiots for helping my best friend and I become so close. The three concerts we attended together are some of my favorite memories with her. Twenty years from now when "Drag Me Down" is playing on the radio, I will smile thinking back of all the good times I had while listening to their music.
