What is next?

What is the next step after you graduate high school.

I just graduated from high school and now it is time for the next step, but what is the next step? I am ready to take on the world and make an impact as all the speakers at my graduation informed me. There are lot of expectations attached to graduating, independence, changing the world and having it all. But maybe the expectations are not what we need to focus on but the possibilities.

You always hear those stories of the person who didn’t quite make it. Making it what does that mean, that I went to college, graduated, and now I am making tons of money or that I am doing what makes me happy. What if what makes me happy is living on a deserted island and living off the land, is that making it? What really shows you made it is the impact you have. You do not have to be the worlds renowned surgeon to make an impact. In everyday life by being kind to that one person who is having a bad day which means you impacted them. We touch people when we do not even realize it, you are impacting change in the world one interaction at a time. In a way you have already made it, so in whatever you decide you are making a change no matter how small it is.

As I sat there not just at my own graduation but my friends as well listening to speakers tell me to make the most of my life that I could try to have it all. The key word is try the hard truth is having it all is not possible. You can only have what you are willing put yourself out there to get. So if you set yourself up to get a great job or a family, then hopefully you will reach what you consider success. Independence is attached to graduating you are now on your own in the big bad world. Your parents have been there for the last 18 years and will continue to be supportive. A degree of Independence is given, although full independence is earned when you no longer need the support.

So many possibilities are available but what comes out of the possibilities is up to you. The ideas attached to graduating will only get you so far, so you might not yet be completely independent, you might never have it all, and you might not even make it. None of that matters what really matters is you tried and you are doing what you want even if its unconventional.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
