What My Sorority Has Given Me

Heading into recruitment season, it’s important to remember what being in a sorority really adds to your life.

What My Sorority Has Given Me

Family away from home.

I go to school more than 600 miles from home, and I’d be lying if I said it was always easy. But luckily for me, I have 200+ sisters who make South Carolina a lot more like home. I actually made one of my best friends my freshman year through living in the sorority house, and she is 98% of the reason I didn’t transfer to a school closer to home. Being in a member of a large sorority, it’s difficult to get to know everyone as a best friend, but it’s amazing to know that many people will always be there for you.

Little things to look forward to.

Even on the worst of Mondays, meeting up with my friends at the house for lunch or dinner can always turn my day around. Knowing that I can go hang out at the house and watch Netflix or take a nap is definitely something that has gotten me through quite a few boring lectures.

Big things to look forward to.

I’m lucky enough to have a biological older sister, but all my life I wanted a younger sister. Now I have two awesome littles who fill that role perfectly. Any girl who’s seen Parent Trap wished they had a sister, and joining a sorority is an amazing way to fulfill your childhood dream.

Fun.

Whether it’s going to a function or just having a class together, being in a sorority gives you friends who make doing life so much more fun. Personally, I never thought a science class could be enjoyable, but having a sister to sit in with and study for exams with makes even chemistry tolerable.

My bridesmaids.

Like they say, college isn't about looking for your husband, it's about finding your bridesmaids. If I ever get married, I have no idea who the guy will be, but I can tell you who will be standing next to me—my sister, my high school best friend, and a handful of sorority sisters who are incredible friends.

Amazing memories that will last forever.

I can say that my college experience would not be as amazing as it has been if I hadn’t joined an organization that connected with me so many incredible women. When I’m old and married and my kids ask me about my college years, the fun and crazy things I’ve done with some of my sisters will undoubtedly be at the top of my list of stories.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
