What I Miss Most From Home

While studying abroad has been one of the most incredible experiences in my life, if not the most incredible experience of my life I can't help but find myself missing the little things from home.

What I Miss Most From Home
True Status

It has been 88 days since I've been home in America. After spending this length of time in Florence I truly believe I've changed as a person. Studying abroad has opened my eyes to the different cultures in the world, it has made me more of an independent person, and above all has given me a more positive perspective on life. While studying abroad has been one of the most incredible experiences in my life, if not the most incredible experience of my life, I can't help but find myself missing the little things at home sometimes. And here's what I miss the most...

1. Waking up without a ton of mosquito bites

In Florence, there aren't screens on the windows. So, if you get hot at night (which you without a doubt will) you have no choice but to open the window, and when you open the window you pay the price of suffering many mosquito bites in your sleep. Itch relief cream has become my savior here in Florence.

2. People who walk fast

No offense, Florence. But you people do not know how to walk with a purpose. Not only are you everywhere, but you move the pace of a snail. Do me a favor and speed up your strides.

3. Not having to pay to use a restroom

Have you ever heard of such a horrid thing? When you got to go you got to go, but if you don't have a euro you can forget about going.

4. My hairdresser

3 months in abroad and you can bet that I need a haircut. Considering that none of the hairdressers here speak english that is totally and completely out of the question. Anthony, I miss you dearly and so does my hair.

5. Water that doesn't cost an arm & a leg

When I first heard that wine in Florence is cheaper than water I was overjoyed. Now I've learned this was another way of saying drink wine over water because water is over priced. Who would of thought that water would be the thing to break my bank abroad??

6. A good ole' bacon egg and cheese

There's nothing better than waking up hungover in the morning and scarfing down a good ole' bacon egg and cheese. Well if you want one, you can forget about it.

7. My annoying parents and pesky older sister

I'll probably regret saying this once I get home but yeah, I guess sometimes I miss them. And of course, Grandma.

8. Frat house parties

Don't get me wrong Florence has a great night life. I love a good casual night at Lion's Fountain or a night out at Club Bamboo but my heart is left at the frat house parties of Elon, along with some of my dignity. I miss being able to walk into a party and knowing everyone in the room. Here in Florence, I am surrounded by people I don't know, and if you want to socialize good luck screaming over the music in the club.

9. My bed

The whole twin bed thing is getting kind of old, and it feels like I'm sleeping on a rock.

10. Doctors who speak English

So, I didn't realize this would be an issue till I wound up in the hospital with an allergic reaction and none of the doctors spoke English. Before I knew it I was getting shots in my arm without warning or explanation. Yeah... That was fun.

11. Eating something other than pasta for every meal

The food here is to die for so I know I shouldn't complain but of course I'm going to. I am craving greasy American food.

12. Not having to walk blocks away to take the trash out

I guess this isn't really all that bad... I'm just lazy and the garbage smells atrocious.

13. My friends who aren't studying with me abroad

Only 1 more month and we are reunited. Miss you guys a ton.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
