What Makeup Has Taught Me

Makeup isn't all blending shadows and false lashes, there are some valuable life lessons to learn.

I remember being interested in makeup since I was in 6th grade. Back then, I couldn't seem to put on mascara without getting it all over the rest of my face, but now, I couldn't imagine my life without it. My favorite part of every morning is my makeup routine. I don't wear makeup to impress anyone or to cover up flaws, I wear makeup because I love the way it makes me feel.

Makeup is more than just products, it has taught me:

It's what's inside that counts

Wearing makeup at an early age made me recognize early on that character and personality is what speaks to others, not long lashes or winged liner. So many young girls focus on their outer appearance in hopes that it will make them cooler or more popular, but makeup can't build character or friendships.

Embrace your features

Makeup can't change the structure of your face, but it can accentuate your best features and camouflage the ones you don't want to be as prominent. Makeup allows you to draw attention to different aspects that set you apart and make you unique. Beautiful brown eyes can be even more prominent with some smoky plum eyeshadow and a black liner to define the color. Makeup isn't about hiding your features, it's about enhancing them.

Express yourself

Makeup can be a form of artwork. Just like your wardrobe, your makeup can be a way to express the type of person you are. Feeling dramatic? Throw on a pair of false lashes. Feeling sexy? Put on your favorite red lipstick. Feeling mysterious? Come up with a killer smokey eye. The possibilities are endless. You get to represent yourself in a whole new way every morning.

I’m beautiful with and without makeup

The older I got, the more I realized that I am just as beautiful with makeup as I am without. Makeup has offered me a way to enhance the features that I already love about myself. I am able to feel confident with a full face of makeup and right after I take it off.

Despite popular opinion, wearing makeup does not have to mean insecurity or self loathing. I wear makeup because I love the way I look. I love my brown eyes and long lashes. I love my round cheeks and arched brows. I wear makeup to show off what I love about myself.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
