There are many reasons one would consider joining Greek life, whether it be to meet new friends, business opportunities, bettering your resume, or maybe your mom forced it. It may seem like it’s all fun and games, but pledging a sorority is also a serious commitment. Here’s what it’s really like to pledge a sorority:
1. It’s a huge time commitment.
Sorority takes up so much time. Everyone must be involved and must be ready to make sacrifices. Whether you’re planning an event or designing T-shirts, all pledge-mates must be at the meetings.
2. It’s a lot of hard work.
TV shows and movies can make sororities seem like it’s all fun, and no work. While pledging a sorority is a ton of fun, there are also a lot of things you need to learn about your sorority, including the history, purpose, active sisters, etc.
3. There will be drama.
As in every club or group you join, there’s always going to be someone you don’t get along with. When pledging, you must remember to keep a boundary between work and play. Sororities are run like businesses, and you can’t let your personal issues interfere.
4. It can be overwhelming at times.
Trying to manage your time while pledging can get difficult. Sometimes there is so much going on and you start to get stressed out. When this does happen, remember that you can rely on your pledge moms, the active sisters, or your pledge mates. They are all there for you, no matter what.
5. It can be expensive.
Often times, you will have to pay dues to be a part of Greek life. The dues can get a bit pricey, but paying will benefit you in the end. These dues will help to fund events, such as socials, fundraisers, philanthropy events, and more.
