What It's Like To Hear The Words 'Finals Week'

Because we all can agree this is the worst part of the semester.

What It's Like To Hear The Words 'Finals Week'

As much as I hate to say it, the time is approaching us: finals week. This whole semester has been all fun and games, then came two weeks ago when our professors blurted out the word “finals.” How could it be? Weren't we all just out on a Wednesday night during syllabus week? Hearing these words have caused us all to go into immediate panic mode. This is what it’s like to hear those horrible words.

We start to calculate grades, figure out we need to get 108 percent on the final to get a C in a class, and contemplate dropping out. The library starts to fill up and you may find yourself sitting on the floor in Starbucks while chugging your cup of coffee like its a red cup on a Saturday night.

You may even start questioning that decision you made the first week of classes to sit in the back and sleep the whole rest of the semester. During this time, our malicious professors look at us all, laughing, as they pile on the last minute work. So on top of stressing for the five finals you have in a short couple of weeks, you have three papers, four group projects, two exams, and your stats professor's laundry to do. Whether or not you finish it all depends on how much sleep you plan on getting in the next two weeks. To get it all done, none.

Now, hearing these words isn't all bad. It also means that winter break is also approaching. The amazing five weeks you get to go home and forget about this place for awhile. But to get to this point, you first gotta get through the finals, and of course, you have exams on the very last testing day. So leaving for home early isn't an option.

So here it is, finals week, we can do it. All of your difficult finals are most likely on the same day. So you're going to meticulously try to determine which one you're just gonna wing it on, and study the whole week for the other four. This week will be filled with tears, coffee, sleepless nights and tears. Just remember, you may be running on three hours of sleep by the end of the week, but it’ll soon all be over. Just make it through this week, study hard, sleep later. Good luck on finals, your GPA depends on it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
