College is a magical place full of people from all over the world coming together to achieve the same goal: earning a degree. But college shouldn't be all work and no play. You should get out there and meet new people. Open yourself up to new experiences.
Take advantage of going to school with such a diverse student body; you might learn some things that you can't learn by just sitting in a classroom. Talk to the boy who speaks broken English because he's from South America; he may become your boyfriend.
Dating someone who is from a different continent than you is a little bit different. It's nothing like dating the 'boy next door.' You both view the world differently since you two grew up with such different backgrounds. You're intrigued by the other person's point of view and how it varies from yours. Part of the fun is integrating both cultures together. My significant other is from Brazil, so he teaches me a lot of random Portuguese words and phrases while I teach him a bunch of American slang. I've learned a lot from him, and I continue to learn more about him and his culture every day.
When you date a foreigner, you broaden your horizons. You begin thinking on a larger scale about the world verses how you used to think within the borders of your own country. You become more aware of global issues, and worldly problems tend to hit home. You become a more well-rounded, open-minded person.
You might be wondering how two people from different cultures can make it work. Even though the two of you have major differences, realize that both of you aren't so different after all.
I like my foreign boyfriend because we have similar interests. I like him because he gives me a fresh perspective. There's never a dull moment with us. He's unapologetically himself. His little quirks are what makes him attractive. He cares about me enough to let me into his world, and I let him into mine.
I'm so grateful for everything my foreign exchange student boyfriend has taught me. We've grown a lot together. Love has no borders.
