Struggles of being born a year late.

What It's Like Being The Youngest Of The Friend Group

Ever since I was a young girl, I always had friends who were older than me. I’d click better with my brother’s friends and as I’d get older I would get along better with girls in the grades above me. Eventually, I came to college and made a whole new group of friends… and they’re all seniors while I’m a junior. I find myself at least once a day complaining about something because I'm not the same age or class as them, and if I wrote all of those struggles down it would take me 3 days; so here are the biggest struggles I face from being the youngest of my friend group.

1. As a child, there were always allowed to do the things I couldn't.

From walking downtown by themselves without parental supervision or hanging out past 9:00, I usually wasn’t able to tag along. By the time I was, it was no longer that “cool” or fun anymore.

2. Going along with that one, they’re all allowed to go to the bars and I can’t.

Nights suck sometimes when all your friends wanna take a trip to the bar and all you can do with them is give them rides. They can take trips to Atlantic City and all these casinos and I’m limited to house parties or movie nights.

3. Once they graduate high school, you’re stuck for another year trying to get closer to other people so you’re not such a loner.

They go off to college and start a new chapter of life that’s weird to not be a part of. Instead of seeing them every day you have to plan weekend trips that usually never match up with your schedule, and by the time you graduate you’ve already missed so much so it isn’t the same.

4. Even worse is getting to college and meeting your future bridesmaids and the love of your life: but of course…

They’re all graduating and you and you still have a whole year left to try to live without them being your roommates and your go to’s every single minute of the day. I still do not know how I am going to get through my last two semesters without these girls by my side.

5. Trips are fun until they all want to go experience nightlife and you can’t.

Nothing is worse than feeling like you’re holding your friends back and it’s something you can’t help. I feel like I miss out on so many memories I could be sharing with my best friends because my age holds me back. I would be more patient if I had more friends to wait with, but I don’t.

6. You’re usually treated like a baby.

People don’t understand that just because you’re the youngest of the friend group doesn’t mean you’re that young, you’re just youngER.

7. I have amazing role models as best friends and I could not ask for anything better.

I get to watch all of my best friends take big steps before I do and I learn so many amazing things from them. I take pride in calling them my best friends and following in their footsteps.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
