We all have that group of friends that we truly rely on in college, this one goes out to the real ones.
1. You're basically Hannah Montana, and they know Hannah.
Do you ever feel like you live a double life from college and high school? Because, SAME! Not that you necessarily change as a person - but I mean, kinda! College brings out the most carefree and fun side of you (maybe a little bit of the psycho too..)! I also think a different side of you releases once it sets in that you have T-minus 4 years left before becoming an "adult".
Isn't it weird - going from your freshman year to senior year of college, high school friends and drama becomes so much less relevant! Not that we are into any drama anyways...but there is no time for it! You slowly start to realize that your "friend group" is composed of a bunch of people who live all over the country, rather than down the street. They grow with you, from an 18 year old to a 22 year old adult! You and your college girlfriends create a new life and friend group, together. No one care about what went down in those last 4 years called high school - this is your time to shine.
2. They See You At Your Worst
There is no room for embarrassment here. I mean, literally, there is no physical space to escape.
Forget having privacy to call your mom when you really miss her, or when you are too stressed out and wish she could still make you food. Your college friends get to hear all about how you miss the milkshakes from the local restaurant back home, or how you don't know what setting to put your dryer on - we've all be there.
But these girls just GET IT. You soon warm up to not be embarrassed about these types of things. How about all of the morning afters? We know exactly who picked you up from that house at 7am on Sunday - the girls! Yes, we may tell other friends from home about these events, but only the true witness's can understand the sight of your running mascara and smeared foundation. These girls, your roommates, see you in your prime of ugly, sad, and stressed.
Your college friends see you out in the kitchen studying late at night for an exam (that's probably the next day at 8am), so they understand why you're stressed. They do not take offense to you being bitchy because, well, they can probably guess the reason (let's just say a C on that exam wasn't what you expected). You don't have to explain yourself to them because they just get it.
3. The sisterhood of the traveling 'going out clothes'
Forget having nothing to wear, you now have many different closets to shop around in. Are you really friends if the same white tube top doesn't circulate at least 6 different times between all of you? Didn't think so. Suddenly a trip to Urban is just as exciting for your friends as it is for you. The best is when you all go out a few nights in a row and share the same shirt without washing it after.
Being apart from them over breaks is awful! Aside from the fact that you love and miss them... your closet is basically gone! Things just start to blend together to the point where that you forget that grey skirt you wear once a week actually is not yours (but basically is).
4. They're your home away from home
Let's face it, college isn't always the most comfortable place.
Your best friends make this place feel like your home. You quickly associate comfort with these girls, you feel so at peace with them. When mom isn't there to give you a hug when you're down, these girls are! There is nothing better than coming home from a long day at class and sitting in your living room watching Fixer Upper with your friends. Being able to cook meals together (which is usually mac and cheese) and sit down and have dinner, brings you so much closer.
5. They always give you that extra encouragement
Yeah, schoolwork is really tough sometimes. My friends always push me to do my best and give me confidence! This encouragement can go other ways too though...
Courtney: "Let's go out tonight"
Me: "It's Tuesday, I have work to do"
Courtney: "Are you going to remember the nights you sat inside and studied or the nights you had fun?"
Me: *Starts curling hair*
We like to call this ~ fun encouragement ~ and you need that sometimes! There have been plenty of situations where you can let the stress of school get the best of you. It is important to be surrounded by people who want to forget about it sometimes and go have fun - it's healthy for you!
